Laerskool Laeveld Foundation Phase

Here at Laerskool Laeveld we strive to make every child feel safe and secure, so that every learner can reach his or her full potential. We are a team with experienced teachers who have a passion for education and we strive to keep up to date with the latest developments in education.

In this way an environment is created where the learners can experiment, discover and learn through play. Learning and practicing basic skills is a priority in our classrooms. At the heart of our teaching is the learners' academic, emotional and spiritual formation.

According to the National Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) for Grades 1 to 3, the Foundation Phase has four subjects:

  • Home Language (English)
  • Fist Additional Language (Afrikaans)
  • Mathematics
  • Life Orientation

Insight and Information

At the heart of our teaching is the learners' academic, emotional and spiritual formation.

Learners with learning barriers

Laerskool Laeveld has a re-education class where the learners who shows slow progression receive extra help on a weekly basis, to prevent these learners from falling behind academically.

Discipline (Gr 1-3)

Discipline is very important for order and routine. It is important that the school and our parents join hands in this regard. Our goal is to build each child's self - esteem and not to break them down or label them.

The Foundation Phase has a discipline system where the learners learn the necessary skills to equip them to take the correct action during a contingency situation.

At the beginning of the Grade 1 year, the learners get the opportunity to adapt first. During this period, the school rules are thoroughly discussed and practiced. This takes about two months. Thereafter, the discipline system is applied as for the rest of the Foundation Phase. From the 2nd term, the Grade 3 learners will be exposed to the Grade 4-7 discipline system, in order to ease the transition to the Intermediate phase.

If there is a real problem or concern, the parents will be notified immediately so that the matter can be addressed. Similarly, we also have a positive points system. The learners can earn positive points quarterly as they are rewarded for good behavior.

Waiting class

The Grade 1 - 2 teaching time ends at 13:00. Learners who cannot be picked up immediately remain in the waiting class. The Grade 1-2 class teacher is in her class until 13:30 where your child will be supervised.

(This is your child's class teacher's class.) The Grade 1-2 class teacher is in her class until 13:30 where your child will be supervised.

After that, the extramural program begins. Your child's class teacher is therefore no longer available for supervision. Alternative arrangements must then be made by the parent.

Assessment

Each subject has specific content (minimum requirements) that must be mastered each term. Formal assessment tasks as  determined by CAPS are also done every term in all the subjects. Learners are continuously assessed during the presentation of their 4 subjects.

Reports

Learners receive a formal report at the end of each term. Conversations with parents take place on an ongoing basis and is very important to us.

Parents' Role

Learners in the Foundation Phase need ongoing support and help.

Our parents receive guidance regarding their child (ren)'s work at the beginning of the year during the first parent / information meeting. Thereafter, regular parent communication occurs by means of class letters and parent appointments. We rely on our parents to play a supportive role at all times and to have a positive attitude with a sincere interest in his/her child's work. Trust in our staff ensures happy children and parents!

Homework

Laerskool Laeveld has become a "Half Homework Free" schools since 2020, where the work given to do at home is only rote learning of work already done. We strongly believe in giving our learners the opportunity to be children.
